This week we wrapped up our Healthy Body unit and the best part of the week was creating a life size body! We started with the digestive system and added the lungs, heart and brain to show what our insides look like.  After adding the organs, we drew red and blue lines to illustrate arteries and veins.

The K-kids learned about the respiratory system and the important role of the lungs.  They created their own lungs by labeling the trachea, alveoli, and bronchioles.  The kiddos got to test out their finished product!

Language Arts
In stations this week, the children completed a stamp and spell activity with different vocabulary, a word family sort, and sight word spin activity.  In reading groups, I continue to challenge the kiddos with new books and they are doing a wonderful job sounding out new words and using their Eagle Eye to understand picture clues!

Also, The K-kids learned about making personal connections to stories this week. We read the story, Wemberley Worried and drew a picture to connect with a specific event in the story.

Math
In math stations, the children solved addition and subtraction story problems using manipulatives! They loved creating their own with a partner, too!

This week we began our Healthy Bodies unit, focusing on nutrition and the food groups.  Throughout the next couple of weeks, we will explore the digestive, skeletal, and circulatory system and begin building our bodies!

Science

This week we read a variety of stories including; How Did That Get in my Lunch Box? Good Enough To Eat,  and Inside Your Outside.   All of these stories showed that eating a variety of healthy food provide us energy to play, think, move and learn! Our body is a machine and healthy food is our fuel.  We talked about the negative impact of sugars and how the healthiest way to eat is by eating the rainbow including protein, fruits, dairy and grains. We discussed the different foods that fit into each category and looked at a ‘healthy plate!’ They enjoyed searching through a catalog to find the foods that fit into each team!  We learned that proteins make our muscles and bones strong and carbohydrates provide our body with energy!

Take a look at our healthy plates displayed outside of the classroom.

Math
We completed math stations that related to our healthy body theme.  Many of the games this week introduced the idea of representing data on various charts/graphs.  Using spinners, cards, and dice the children showed information in different visual ways.  In our whole group math partners, we also worked on different addition strategies, looking at more effective ways to use our fingers, use manipulatives, or pictures to solve equations.

 Happy Birthday, Alex!!

Writing
In Writer’s Workshop we continue to focus on using our story hand.  When writing our stories the children will focus on characters, setting and adding two details to their story.  I encourage the children to stretch out the word on their own and do their very best kindergarten spelling!  They are gaining confidence and thinking about how all of these parts connect.
